CHILDREN PAWS TO READ WITH DOGS VIDEO !

Ashlawn Elementary School teacher Cynthia Power was looking for a way to volunteer in her community while spending time with her beloved dog Humphrey. What she found has become one of the most popular reading events in the Arlington County Library system: Paws to Read, the program where kids read to dogs.  The program is designed to help kids with their reading skills and their vocalization skills by spending time reading in a completely non-judgmental,

Cell Dogs Inc. Training Programsell Dogs Inc, training programs are cooperative partnerships between OC Animal Care, Cell Dogs Inc, and local correctional facilities. The goal of this partnership is to improve the lives of incarcerated individuals and shelter dogs. The dogs in this program are both potty and crate trained and have learned their basic manners and obedience skills. In return, the dogs teach the program trainers responsibility, respect and the rewards of unconditional love. All the dogs are vaccinated, spayed or neutered and microchipped prior to adoption. If you would like more information, please contact Janette Thomas, janette@celldogs.org or Janet Quintanilla, janetq@celldogs.org at 714-747-6782. The PAW Program (Pups and Wards)
OC PROBATION – JUVENILE HALL

Cell Dogs at OC Probation, actively working since 2009, selects 25-30 juvenile wards each year for participation.  Working with the dogs demands commitment and patience, and program trainers learn the rewards of working hard towards positive goals.  California recidivism rates for juvenile offenders are upwards of 55% within the first year of release.  A recent research study by the University of California Irvine/National Institute of Health reported the recidivism rate for our Cell Dogs program to be just 16%.

ADVANCED TRAINING - SERVICE DOGS

During our training courses, some dogs prove to be quick studies in basic obedience.  These canines, expressing an eagerness to learn more and do more, are then given advanced training to become service dogs.  Our scope at Cell Dogs includes: Autism Service Dogs, PTSD Service Dogs, and Wheelchair Service Dogs.  This training program typically requires an additional 6-9 months

History of PAWS Lynne Robinson, after 23 years of teaching in public schools, retired and chose to volunteer with several different organizations until she rescued Boo Radley, a 112 pound deep reddish golden retriever and became a pet therapy team with him leading the way. After joining another pet therapy organization for about a year, Lynne realized the tremendous power of pet therapy and decided to found PAWS for People – to focus on the healing aspect of pet therapy and teach other therapy teams how to do individualized therapeutic visits for which PAWS is known. Demand for reliable, top quality pet therapy became such that PAWS began to grow rapidly, but intentionally, and as our site requests increased, so did the number of people that wanted to join PAWS with their gentle, friendly pets.

Always conscious of the need for continuous improvement, PAWS began adding programs and trainings to fit those programs, so that teams wanting to work with kids in libraries needed to take the PAWS for Reading Training. People wanting to visit with clients in mental health sites were encouraged to complete the PS (Psychiatric Support) PAWS training. The number of our programs grew to support the interests of our members and the number of trainings grew to support our programs. We now offer 24 different types of programs to our members.

With our mission of loving individualized visits with gentle, sweet pets always at our heart, PAWS has grown to be the largest pet therapy organization in the Mid-Atlantic region serving all of Delaware and parts of PA, NJ, and MD and a diverse group of dedicated people and their amazing therapy pets.

We say that our main objective is “to provide the very best visit for everyone involved” – the recipient, the therapy human, and the pet. With our eye on that objective, we continue to recruit, train, certify, place, and oversee happy humans and adorable pets doing the very best pet therapy we can provide.

DOGS HELP KIDS READ OUR PROVEN CURRICULUM The SitStayRead Curriculum SitStayRead uses a curriculum designed to support key literacy skills at that grade-level. Each program is created in partnership with our Program Advisory Committee, which includes SitStayRead staff, volunteers, teachers, and faculty from the University of Illinois at Chicago Center for Literacy, University of Chicago, DePaul University, and Northeastern Illinois University, and is built using Common Core standards. Each program uses dog-themed books and materials and incorporates different reading and writing skills and initiatives. The Little Buddies (1st Grade) program focuses on big picture literacy skills like character identification, sequencing, and listening comprehension. The program also introduces students to the concept of having dogs in the classroom and has a special focus on social emotional learning. Each class engages in a read aloud and group discussion followed by visits with our Dog Team during a

Little Buddies Program Evaluation

Over the course of the 2016-17 school year, we collaborated with professor David Shriberg, Ph.D. at Loyola University to develop and utilize a mechanism for assessing the success of our first grade Little Buddies program. This program focuses specifically on “big picture” literacy skills like character identification, sequencing, retelling, and prediction, as well as social-emotional learning.

We are happy to report that our study found that students in SitStayRead classrooms tended to outperform the students in non-SitStayRead classrooms in reading and writing tasks, and SitStayRead students made greater gains in receptive vocabulary, listening comprehension, and written expression. Additionally, SitStayRead story time was associated with high levels of student engagement and focus.

SitStayRead provides year-round programming for low-income students in kindergarten through third grades in Chicago Public Schools. Each grade’s curriculum is designed to support key literacy skills at that level. Each grade-level program is created in partnership with our Program Advisory Committee, which includes SitStayRead staff, volunteers, teachers, and faculty from the University of Illinois at Chicago Center for Literacy, University of Chicago, DePaul University, and Northeastern Illinois University.

Kindergarten

In our new Kindergarten program, piloted in Spring 2018 and gradually expanding in Spring 2019, a team of two Book Buddies, one Dog Team, and a Program Leader visit a classroom for a one-hour visit, once a week, over six consecutive weeks. During each visit, the Program Leader engages the class in a read-aloud of a dog-themed picture book and group discussion. Students then transition to small group stations to work with Book Buddies. These stations are focused on sight words, writing, and Dog Team visits.

The goal of this program is to practice reading common high-frequency sight words and to identifying key details in a story. Dog Team visits introduce students to the concept of having dogs in their classroom and teach them dog safety skills.

Children give up on learning because society and family expect the worst. In walk the dogs and the insurmountable obstacles disappear.

In 2013 we partnered with the Department of School Psychology at Loyola University Chicago to create an evaluation tool that measured student achievement in reading fluency and comprehension. The evaluation also included components of the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) and a survey measuring attitude towards reading and learning. The study found that students in SitStayRead developed fluency at a rate 47.8% greater than their non-participating peers.
