Lawmakers Approve Hertzberg Bill to Shelter Pets of the Homeless SB 258 would create a grant program

 March 25, 2019

SACRAMENTO – Senate Majority Leader Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys) announced that his bill to provide more shelter options for individuals experiencing homelessness and their pets cleared the Senate Human Services Committee.

SB 258 would allocate $5,000,000 in grants to be distributed to homeless shelters that provide shelter, food, and basic veterinary services to the pets of people experiencing homelessness.

According to Pets of the Homeless, an estimated five to ten percent of the 3.5 million Americans that are experiencing homelessness have dogs or cats. Unfortunately, many of those individuals refuse housing and forego access to services because doing so may require them to abandon their pet. In Los Angeles, only six shelters out of 46 in the region allow pets onsite[1],[2].

“Over two thirds of the homeless population in our state is unsheltered, and yet there are far too many empty beds in shelters across Los Angeles County each night people don’t want to leave their best friend on the street,” said Senator Hertzberg. “This bill may be about pets, but in caring for pets, we are supporting both ends of the leash. This is a common sense way to quickly help people get off the street.”

Senator Hertzberg was joined in the hearing by supporters Gina Knepp, the Manager of Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento, and Janet Hendrickson, President of Changing the Streets.

SB 258 next heads to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

HEALTH Warm and fuzzy THERAPY

These ‘angels with fur’ are good medicine for area cancer patients

Patients were treated with an unconventional medicine Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospital’s Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment in Orange.

The result? They reported feeling happy and upbeat, and they smiled a lot. They even said they looked forward to another dose.

Six sweet-tempered dogs got into the center’s elevator and rode up to the second floor, radiation/ oncology, on National Therapy Animal Day, a day created by Pet Partners to “promote the health and wellness benefits of animal-assisted therapy, activities, and education.”

Therapy Dogs Who Consoled Students, Staff After Parkland Shooting Get Their Own Yearbook Page

image63

This year’s edition of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School yearbook features some very good boys and girls.

Among the photos of students and staff are the furry, smiling faces of the 14 therapy dogs that have kept MSD students and staff company since the day they returned to school following last year’s mass shooting.

Their presence has brought joy and comfort when the MSD community needed it most, so it only seemed right to honor them with a special yearbook page and some expert canine portraiture.

“The kids love having the dogs on campus, and honestly, do so we,” yearbook adviser Sarah Lerner told CNN.

Lerner said the dogs are like celebrities around school, and the idea to include their pictures came after another resident dog, who belongs to the school’s media specialist, got her picture taken on school picture day.

K9 Veterans Day honors military working dogs

image67

K9 Veteranʼs Day honors the service, dedication and companionship provided by military working dogs. There is a rich and storied tradition of manʼs best friend as they relate to military service starting as far back as the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians.

Today, that tradition continues on modern battlefields and through Legacy of Valor partner Southeastern Guide Dogsʼ Paws for Patriots program.

The military working dogʼs role in service includes courier duties, guard and sentry duties, and occasionally direct-action against opposing forces (think biting and take down). They also contribute significantly through the use of their highly developed sense of smell by detecting hidden explosives. Above and beyond all of those duties, the military working dog provides friendship, comfort, and companionship to its handler and is always treated with  respect and dignity.

An example of this dignity is that military working dogs are given military ranks, always higher than their handlers, to ensure that human soldiers never forgets to place the dogs' needs above their own. K9ʼs are also paid as soldiers. The pay covers their care, feeding, and contributes toward their eventual retirement from military service.

This kind of companionship is carried over after military service ends and that is where Southeastern Guide Dogsʼ Paws for Patriots comes into the picture. They provide service animals to disabled military veterans at no cost to the veteran as a way of saying thank you for their dedication to our country. The dogs are trained and certified as therapy dogs or guide dogs before being handed over to the veteran -- always to the benefit of both the animal and handler.

These dogs often provide SIGNIFICANT improvement in quality of life to the veterans. Their canine presence enables the veteran to participate in simple activities that you and I take for granted or provides peace of mind in an otherwise desperate situation.

Is it too easy to obtain an emotional support animal prescription?

image69

SALT LAKE CITY — If “a peacock, a pig and a hamster walk into an airport” sounds like the beginning of a bad joke — and airlines clearly think so — then welcome to the controversy surrounding emotional support animals.

Airlines have the sympathy of landlords, too. They say the joke could as easily begin: “a guinea pig, a hedgehog and a cat are looking for an apartment.”

HOW TO SPEAK WITH DOGS TRAINING.

image70

If you’re talking to a puppy, increase the pitch of your voice and slow the tempo,” says Mario Gallego-Abenza, a cognitive biologist and an author of a recent study analyzing canine response to human speech. People tend to use that high-register, baby-talk tone with all dogs, but it’s really only puppies under a year old that seem to like it. “With older dogs, just use your normal voice,” he says.

Dogs can learn words. One well-studied border collie named Ricoknew 200 objects by name and, like a toddler, could infer the names of novel objects by excluding things with labels he already knew. Use facial expressions, gestures and possibly food treats while you talk. “Maintain eye contact,” Gallego-Abenza says. Research shows that even wolves are attuned to the attention of human faces and that dogs are particularly receptive to your gaze and pointing gestures. Scientists disagree about whether dogs are capable of full-blown empathy, but studies suggest canines feel at least a form of primitive empathy known as “emotional contagion.” In one study, dogs that heard recordings of infants crying experienced the same spike in cortisol levels and alertness as their human counterparts.
